It’s funny, but one of the things I remember as a young boy was the number of Coronation mugs (and other memorabilia) that were knocking around in my friends’ houses. Looking back, it’s even more odd when you consider that 1952 wasn’t exactly an era of rampant marketing activity – post-war austerity and all that!
Fast-forward to 2012, the Queen’s 60th Anniversary Jubilee weekend is upon us (shame about the weather forecast!). The shops (and newspaper ads) are laden with all sorts of Jubilee goodies we’ll no doubt see on the Antiques Roadshow (or its equivalent) 30 years from now.
It’s great that we have an extra-long weekend to celebrate. No, it won’t damage the economy all you curmudgeonly types. Just compare the damage that the month-long Xmas break does, to put things in perspective. God Save the Queen – and God help us all!
